Director - Product Engineering Manager

The Role

Farmshelf’s mission is to disrupt traditional farming through beautiful automated systems that allow anyone to grow their own food where they live, work and eat. We seek a Product Engineering Manager to help lead our rapidly growing company and drive substantial impact.

We are looking for a passionate engineer with 6+ years of relevant experience and the ability to adapt within a fast-paced environment. An ability to embrace uncertainty and continued learning is vital to this role. This person will lead the Systems Engineering team responsible for the mechanical design of Farmshelf and manufacturing of the system. You will be responsible for the full product lifecycle from ideation through installation of mechanical components and systems within the Farmshelf product

Responsibilities

  • Create innovative solutions and advance the state of indoor farming alongside software engineers, agricultural scientists, and initial beta customers.

  • Own mechanical and design engineering roadmaps

  • Manage and build out design and engineering team

  • Shape foundation of our systems engineering team - research and make key decisions about what we build, how we build it, and which tools are best for solving problems.

  • Design scalable, manufacturable components and mechanical systems to support the demands of our food growing systems.

  • Manage assessment of failure modes across all components and mechanical systems, leveraging tools such as CFD analysis, FEA, and the FMEA framework.

  • Support the design and build of prototype systems to enable our software engineering and agricultural science teams to continue to experiment and collect data to drive strategic decisions.

  • Own BOMs for internal designs and outsourced designs.

  • Establish and cultivate relationships with vendors and suppliers and effectively manage expectations internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • Strong mechanical engineering/design skill set - likely MS in Mechanical Engineering or other related field

  • Experience managing teams

  • 6+ years of experience

  • Design for Manufacturing experience

  • Passionate to solve problems, and pursue challenges

  • Excited to work with a fast-growing mission-driven startup

Skills

  • Experience managing projects that require collaboration with external partners and/or multi-functional teams.

  • New Product Introduction (NPI) process, and program management

  • Fluent in 3D CAD software (currently using Solidworks)

  • Risk analysis and mitigation

Bonus

  • Six Sigma and Predictive Maintenance experience

  • Background manufacturing products that involve injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, vacuum forming and water systems

  • Consumer Product, Kitchen Appliances and/or Furniture experience

  • Understanding of hydroponic growing methods and challenges

  • LED light design and thermal management experience
